Fit to Be Tie-dyed

OK. These reproductions don't do justice at all to Katy Schimert's work, which is on view at David Zwirner gallery. Her large watercolors have a stain-glassed or tie-dyed look: colors bleed and explode while depicting simple outlined figures and trees. Although the imagery could be considered cartoony, there's something else at work here, so you can't dismiss it so easily. Her tree sculptures are awesome. About eight feet high, these intricately-woven, copper wire sculptures are impressive. According to a gallery employee, this painstaking lacing was done by hand, which is astounding.
