Wandering Eye

Uwe Kowski Fluss paintingAlthough Uwe Kowski may have attended the same art university that gave rise to the "New Leipzig School," this German artist's paintings don't look representational of that movement. While the work of the New Leipzig School emphasizes the figure, Kowski's six large-scale paintings at Mary Boone gallery are abstract-expressionist--more de Kooning than Hopper. Letters from words float over these smeared chaotic landscapes. The paintings' deconstruction and reconstruction kept my wandering eye happy. (Images via Mary Boone gallery)
