Flophouse Rothko

When I first saw Sarah Jones's photographs at Anton Kern gallery, I thought: "Rothko for the flophouse set." The composition of these large scale images, as well as the colors' shifting tones, reminded me of Rothko's signature paintings. However, Jones took these photos at artist colonies rather than single occupancy rooms. (Who knew artist residences were so austere?) This exhibit shares the same space as Enrique Metinides's excellent show, so you get an extra bonus if you check out either one. (Images via Anton Kern)
